We currently have Girls on the Run programs at public, private and charter schools in the Bay Area, as well as in partnership with community-based organizations, such as the YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs.
Girls on the Run provides nearly everything needed to deliver the program:
- 10-week fall or spring programs open to 10-16 girls in either 3rd-5th grades or 6th-8th grades
- Girls on the Run curriculum and all necessary program materials and supplies
- Coach training and ongoing coach support throughout the season
- End-of-the-season Lollipop Run event for all girls in the program
Each program site is required to provide the following:
- A Site Liaison (see Liaison Role Description for a description of this person's role)
- Program support and approval from the school principal or site director
- A safe, dedicated space for running for a hour twice a week. THIS IS ESSENTIAL. This does not have to be a track; a field or blacktop area is fine. We prefer that the area is separate from other activities to limit distractions for the girls
- A consistent rain location that is indoors and private. We prefer a gym that is reserved for Girls on the run and separate from other programs
- A plan for recruiting participants
- Distribution of registration forms to all participants. Teams consist of 10-16 girls. Some sites may be approved for multiple teams
- A minimum of one coaching candidate per team for your site. Each coach will be required to attend four hours of Girls on the Run training before the season starts, be fingerprinted and have a current TB test (in the last four years). Coaches must be available two afternoons per week during the entire 10-week program. Girls on the Run will provide coach marketing materials and can assist with developing a marketing plan for identifying volunteer coaches. Coaches do not need to be runners or have coaching experience.
- Substitute coaches (parents, school staff, volunteers) that can be called upon in advance and in emergency situations when a coach is out.
- Secure storage area for program supplies, snacks, etc.
