How GOTR Has Guided Me Through College & Beyond

When I think back on my childhood, Girls on the Run was one of the most joyful and formative parts of growing up. I joined the program when I was 9 and 10 years old and it was more than just running laps or crossing a finish line – it was about building confidence, friendships, and learning how to believe in myself. Having my mom and sister as my coaches made the experience even more special. Practices felt like a mixture of laughter, movement, and life lessons which I still carry with me today. One of the most valuable lessons I carry with me on every run is the mantra, ‘Don’t race yourself, pace yourself.’ It not only keeps me grounded while running but also guides me through the pace and challenges of my everyday life, especially as I navigate college classes.

Being part of GOTR taught me the value of staying active while also reminding me how important it is to lift others up. It was a space where I could set goals, practice resilience, and feel supported every step of the way. Those lessons have stuck with me and continue to shape who I am and what I want to pursue in life. Today, I carry the same spirit into coaching a 12U volleyball team, where I encourage young athletes to grow both on and off the court. It also connects to my academic journey as I major in Biology preparing for a career in nursing, where supporting others, building resilience, and working towards long-term goals will be just as essential.

This group photo was taken at State Farm Stadium in Arizona with the 15U volleyball team that Ryann was an assistant coach on last year.

Now, as an intern with Girls on the Run Bay Area, it feels like such a full-circle moment. To give back to a community that has poured so much into me is truly rewarding, and it’s inspiring to help create those same opportunities for the next generation of girls.
