Girls on the Run Bay Area Seeks Community Running Buddies for Annual 5K Celebration

San Francisco, CA - Girls on the Run Bay Area is calling on community members to lace up their sneakers and join as Running Buddies for the organization’s upcoming 5K celebration on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Each season, Girls on the Run participants, girls in grades 3rd to 8th,  train for a non-competitive 5K as the culmination of a 8-week program that builds confidence, leadership skills, and healthy habits. To help every girl cross the finish line, each is paired with an adult Running Buddy who runs alongside her, offering encouragement and support every step of the way.

“Being a Running Buddy is incredibly impactful: you witness the students’ joy and determination as they cross the finish line - something they have been working toward all season,” said Catherine Muriel, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Bay Area. “It’s also a perfect opportunity for community members who may not have time to volunteer every week, but can volunteer for one Saturday morning to make a lasting difference.”

“I’ll never forget the look on my buddy’s face when we crossed the finish line,” said Kathy Cruz Funes, who has been a Running Buddy for the team at Loma Verde Elementary School  in Novato. “She had been nervous at the start, but mile by mile we kept going together. Seeing her realize she could finish her very first 5K was incredible — and I felt so grateful to be by her side for that moment.”

Running Buddies are needed for more than 650 girls participating in this season’s program across the Bay Area. Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome. Running Buddies must be able to run, jog, or walk 3.1 miles at the girl’s pace, complete a background check, and register with a $55 entrance fee.
